Limewash vs German Schmear: Which Brick Finish Wins?
Both soften brick. One is reversible. One is not. Here is how to choose.
You Have Brick. You Want It Softer. Two Options. One Decision.
If you have an exposed brick fireplace, exterior brick, or a brick accent wall and you want to tone it down without painting over it completely, you have two real options: limewash or German schmear. Both soften the brick. Both are hand applied. They produce very different results.
What Is Limewash on Brick?
Limewash is a thin mineral coating brushed over the brick surface. It partially covers the brick, creating a soft, translucent wash that lets the texture and color of the original brick show through. The result is muted, organic, and European.
Limewash on brick is mostly reversible. It can be removed with pressure washing or acid wash if you change your mind.
What Is German Schmear?
German schmear (also called mortar wash) involves spreading a thin layer of mortar or thinned grout over the brick surface by hand, then wiping some of it away before it fully sets. The result is a heavy, textured, whitewashed look where some brick is fully covered and some shows through.
German schmear is permanent. Once the mortar cures, it cannot be removed without damaging the brick underneath.
The Look
Limewash: subtle, soft, Mediterranean. The brick texture is fully visible. The color is simply muted. It reads as "aged European stone wall."
German schmear: heavy, rustic, farmhouse. The brick is partially obscured by mortar. It reads as "old European cottage" or "modern farmhouse."
Cost
Both run $4 to $10 per square foot on brick surfaces. German schmear may cost slightly less because it typically requires one application versus 2 to 3 coats for limewash. The difference is marginal.
Durability
Limewash on brick: lasts 5 to 10 years on exterior surfaces. Can be refreshed with an additional coat. Interior limewash on brick lasts 15+ years.
German schmear: permanent. The mortar cures and becomes part of the surface. It does not need refreshing. It also cannot be undone.
